Personal Statements: Where's your dignity?

Having to define myself and life worth into 1,000 words and a few pages is a hard thing for me to do. Self-worth has always been a big deal of mine. I don’t feel that one essay on a dumb topic can sum up all that I am worth. I believe that personal statement is a huge waste of time, and should not be an assignment that all students should do. Having to sum up my self-worth according to a rubric grading sheet is ridiculous. I live for more than an essay that defines who I am; I am more that just a few pages. Colleges that decide on students making an entry based solely on a personal statement obviously do not have any sense of personal pride that a student has to offer. Students are a lot more than just a GPA and an essay. Does anybody else agree with me that the personal statement is not a proper way to understand a student's dignity?

  1. I totally agree with this. Preach brother! Honestly though, you can't sum up anything with just words imagine summing up a human being in words. Honestly I feel like people can't really be described with words. "Believe what you see." That quote is perfect for this post because honestly if you describe someone with words, they could be that way for a little but over time you actually get to see how someone actually lives and breathes. You need time to get to know someone for who they are not just an essay on someone or gpa.

  2. I agree with you. I do believe that a few pages of my accomplishments are not going to convince you who I really am. It won't justify everything else that I have gone through in my personal life. Colleges don't see that other side of us which actually defines who we are as well. People usually tend to leave out the terrible things that have happened to them or what they've done, but it is usually those parts where we actually get down to the core and see the real you.

  3. Haha babe, I could totally hear your voice when I am reading this. Well it is a PERSONAL statement. It is not a mere brag sheet, but an insight into one's thinking, background, culture, and passion. For someone like me who truly values the beauty and strength in words, personal statements are wonderful. They truly let you express yourself without being concerned that someone is observing you like in an interview. I guess it also depends on the prompt your choose to write, but I guess in short i disagree with you.
