I really enjoyed this lesson that Ms. Fletcher taught us. I always that the only way you could fix a run-on sentence was to either delete the whole thing, or just separate it somehow. Ms. Fletcher showed us the different ways to handle that type of situation and still make it flow. My favorite way she explained to us was number 4 (I believe), which was how to use a semi colon correctly.
DEPENDENT + [;] INDEPENDENT = CORRECT STRUCTURE.
Basically, it is only write to use the semi colon when you trying to connect two clauses that have the same subject. She always showed us that you can use the semi colon and attach a independent marker word, such as: however, consequently, therefore, and many others. You would use the marker word at the beginning of the independent clause.
Overall, I found this grammar lesson a very helpful one. I appreciate the help and assistance Ms. Fletcher gave us. Does anyone else agree that this lesson was kind of mind changing? That it kind of broke the common barriers of how we should repair run-on/fused sentences?
I guess Fletch being a "snoot" was helpful overall!
I feel the same way, the grammar lesson really helped because I never really knew when to use semi colons AT ALL. Although, now I feel a sense of control due to the fact that I'm way more aware of when's the correct time to use it. When I took the SAT last Saturday I was able to structure my sentence way more effectively than before the lesson. Run ons are no longer a problem for Desiree Thomas. One step forward to being a better writer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Christian! Before she taught us that grammar lesson I would always always have run-on sentences and the only way I would fix it was by either putting a comma or just splitting it up as well. But after the lesson I understood it and I now know how to properly fix a run-on sentence!
ReplyDeleteI agree because I rarely used a semi colon because I never understood when to actually use it. It seems like I always have run on sentences when i'm writing too fast or when i'm really into what i'm writing about. This lesson was very helpful to me. I also enjoyed the lesson we did in class today. It taught me that you can put A LOT of sentences into one.
